Lots of rock climbing vids around but this one seemed to capture the reality of being way way up high, risk and consequences more so than some more technical climbing ones and even many free solo ones. The camera angles, his cautious approach and sense of exposure freaked me out,

Stu (and Steve) have written excellent articles on Brasilian surfing today. Rather than clutter up that thread, when Stu writes:

"Answering his own question, Paulo says of the missing kids: “Perhaps they were focused on Minecraft or their smartphones, who knows?”

Being a father to three young kids myself, I despair at the creeping prevalence of screens. In my more righteous moments I wonder what’s happened to surfing that an arvo session runs second fiddle to Xbox."

... I can add this link.

An astute take by this young fellow. Pay particular attention to the increases in depression and self harm among young people after 2012, and the cause postulated by the doco.

Hello VJ

Thank U for highlighting this and the Great Articles that Stu , Steve and the team at SN just keep delivering .

The Phone ( and Laptop) have almost taken over my life 2 and sure will continue 2 Change Human behaviour .

I saw an photo of a Packed Australian Beach in the 70's .

What Stood out 2 Me , was that there were NO Overweight People !!!

The swimming Trunks were More There and not One tattoo , was a B&W photo .

Maybe our generation , passed on some bad habits ?

I think Tatts are Art and cool , I don't have one ( MA didn't give David a Snake ) !

Not a big Trunk Swimmer guy either , if someone else doesn't want 2 wear them 2 ,

I do , as Old fashioned about a Kosi .

Jeez that was a great video, VJ. Well researched, edited, not looking to accuse, little naff on the ending, but overall excellent. Skated over many things but offered enough dot points for curious folk to do their own reading. I mean, just the fact he, a Gen Xer, delved back into history to find modern answers is a novel thing these days.

Really glad you linked it. Gonna watch it with my eldest when the time is right.

+1, really good @vj. speaking from experience, I would much prefer my own company to being lonely with another person. If you've ever had a shit partner, or an absent parent, you'll know what I mean. Being taken for granted is a killer. As parents we must always be present, even if it's awkward or painful. That our young people have an engaging instant-gratification device as an alternative to real people, makes it more important than ever. Whatever you establish in youth, you carry for life.

Both my kids have training in varied athletic disciplines, they also play musical instruments. Daily routines that inspire learning and developing skills without access to screens are essential - if they're lucky (do their homework / chores / and treat each other well) then they get downtime on the w/end. This way it's earned.

VJ. Stu & Basesix. Hope you and your families are well.

Excellent discussion point, I’m impressed by all of your takes on this topic.

Basesix, I agree wholeheartedly that it’s better to enjoy your own company than be lonely with a toxic or difficult partner.

Stu. I’d be pleased if it’s ok, to hear how your oldest son views that doco when you sit down together.
I’ve a 22 year old son and he likes his own company, I’m always keeping a caring eye on him. AW

I say the Serenity Prayer , most days as it helps me ( hard to believe , I know but a work in progress ) .

Blah Blah , "grant me the serenity 2 accept the things I cannot change , courage 2 change the things I can and wisdom 2 know the difference . "

Realising and accepting , my family ( especially my kids ) are also THINGS , was a revelation I needed and need constant reminding of .

So , when I think My daughters haven't called me , I call them and feel great .

2 C them 4 2 weeks , all I do is organise ( and pay ) 4 a holiday , somewhere .

KIS Pop !

Mate , U have bloody Planted the Most perfect Seed , 4 ME , really .

As U know I am 64 , played 2 many , nearly , games of Football and had a hammy spasm walking 4.5 holes of Golf recently .

I surprisingly , put my hand up 2 join an Old Farts ( like 10 years older than me ) Group of Do Gooders , that are going 2 Bhutan in late May , to raise some money 4 the Queens Charity that Educates Women to help with empowerment .

The surprise came when I found out ALL the Other Crew are fn Real Mountaineers .

The Guy who is Leading the Tour is 76 and has a Foundation that supports both Nepal and Bhutan .

He has fn climbed Everest , I just found out haha , but he said he didn't get 2 the Tippy Top .

It won't B a Walk in the Park but I Will have a Crack at raising my Old Body 2 the Monkey Monastery , the biggest climb , of the 10 day trip .

The Other members are getting sponsorship per Meter Climbed .

Even with Meters Climbed Up and Down , my contribution might B small and questionable , so I opted for A FLAT rate system , naturally .

So , the GOAT outfit , bionic limbs arms and legs , could be perfect , if I added a few Oxygen bottles .

Stuff the fridge helmet but the Place banned smoking , so may fn have 2 Eat Grass 2 , 4 extra High energy levels .

No Phone reception so SN will get a bit of Well deserved Serenity .

edit

Pop is not interested in hearing how High , altitude wise , Bhutan is .

What I don't know , might not hurt me as much :))

No internet for sure in Bhutan I’d think. Maybe in the capital. Never been but it seems like going back in time. We trekked Nepal in ‘98 and ‘99 and it was similar but I have no doubt Bhutan was way behind back then.
We took our teenagers in 2018. Internet was better in any remote village than here. Nothing wrong with that. The development has helped immensely.
I hope Bhutan will still be so removed from the world you are going to step back in time.

Thanks for the responses to the vid everyone. It was really well rounded and he didn't seem to go after anyone. I thought he was Gen Z though! I've been exploring a series of similar videos and I think young people, and in particular, young men, are facing extremely difficult challenges; and it's a very different world for them than even the world of 20 years ago. Would you like me to link some of those up?

Jelly that shallowness clip - oh wow, he's created the algo to be a social gigachad that melts people to his whims, far out. 'With great power comes....'

No social media apart from here - text based is nice as it's a little like the more free, anonymous and chaotic early 2000s forums, and it's more fun to get a laugh with ideas, such as this morning's Mexican TV mishap. But I find designing stuff takes screen time! Try to put it up on a big TV screen size and tell myself it's not a laptop...

Will definitely B going back in time , removed from My Real World of Experiences and totally Out of My comfort zone .

What can Go Wrong ?

I thought , at first it was a visit to Shang Ri La and it still might B .

I could become a Monk !?

They have a Gross Domestic Happiness Index , allowed the Internet in 2000 and don't have a traffic light in the Whole Kingdom ( no heated pools or spa baths either ) .

The Head honcho is a Captain Mainwaring type and We are like Dads ( and Mums ) Army 2 the Rescue , perhaps ?

I am trying 2 not B like Jonsey now , and start yelling Don't Panic but will probably be a combination of Pikey and Godfrey on the trip , am guessing , nearly .

loved it @goofy, cheers. The fishing, building and community stuff was great.

(seems the original 4-part, 4-hour series that we are watching on youtube was written and directed by Dmitry Vasyukov. Werner Herzog re-edited it into a 2-hour feature doco, and replaced the Kirill Vats’ narration with his own, the synth-piano soundtrack with more operatic drama, and brought out the austere loneliness, as is his way. The Herzog version was very popular, and now tourists visit Bakhta for a looky-loo, and they even have a little museum and offer classes in traditional arts and crafts.)

Finished them today. Was a great insite into another world. That winter episode, far out. Those trappers away for 3 months in those conditions. Incredible! Really impressed with the trap building particularly the one with the dropping beam. And where would they be without the abundance of fish year round. Seems the main source of protein.

the horrible micro swamp bug activity reminded me of the midges in inner scotland - 'no-see-ums' are the worst; cover you and seek out moist bits like the corner of your eyeball. I wouldn't spend time anywhere other than the edge of nth west coasts and islands now.
(well noticed with the abacus, haha, but with the tourism now, at least they're probably getting better prices for sable pelts and caviar!)
