Opinions and anecdotal stories if you could.

Nobody wanted that piece of land. Too steep, too tricky to build on, bla bla.

Only spent a week in Tassie, but what a place. Can imagine there'd be some incredible houses/views.

VJ mid century modern is such clever architecture. This is a place we bought 2 months back and the more you live in it the more you see how clever this architecture is. Lots of glass, timber and surprisingly very clever ventilation details.

Do you know when it was built?

There was a good TV series on i think ABC of this style/era of houses and doing them up, i like this era of houses, has a lot of potential to do up and modernise, nice lines and plenty of light.

I had a look but cant find the series, watched it quite a while back maybe during Covid, i think it was mostly focussed in Melbourne and was focussed on the history and architecture of that era and preserving it or even rebuilding houses in that style and even furnishing the house's in the style of that era.

Was an interesting series and quite different.

BTW. I dont usually watch the Block, but they are currently filming the next series where i live, i keep seeing their car everywhere i go of late.

VJ….600mm centres for studs in a shed is fine as they would be steel or you can use 90mm pine later on to fill in between the ribs…house frames you do 450mm timber studs….always 450mm centres for any ceiling batons for gyprock.
If your going to convert a shed for a future house get the steel studs at 600 straight up on order and don’t forget the house type slab…it’ll have load bearing ribs through it not just a raft…if you pour the whole slab at once you can have shallower perimeter footings. This is called a monolithic slab.
Important too is get a stepped edge on your slab for any shed as you want the wall sheets to overlap the slab step at least 30mm. That will vermin proof the shed and stop unwanted visitors crawling in.
Shed houses are great. I know quite a few people who started with a shed with a view to build a house next to it and ended up just living in the shed and converting it legally.
Might look a bit odd in suburbia though…country style for sure.
If you’re a young guy building a house consider your kids.
A small humble home and a big yard for the kids will bring more joy than the reverse.
Everywhere I look I see all house no yard…kids just sit on devices inside.
Our families favorite home when the kids were young was a little two bed renter near the beach…
Cheap rent but not much room so I bought a 30 ft tri axle caravan from a residents park complete with full length solid annexe for $1500 take away...
Nobody wanted the old beast ha ha so I had it towed to the backyard…set up the large timber floored annexe and the 3 kids moved in there and frothed on it.
They had their own pad….surfed when they wanted and had friends over for movies and vid games….it was so peaceful in the little house for the missus and I.
So there are different ways to have shelter….just got to think it through.

Builders are more than struggling. I noticed in the past week or two a number of large ones have gone bust, including even another one this morning. It's a constant weekly occurrence for the past few years and nothing is being done about it.

Completely out of control immigration combined with the constant collapsing of builders is the perfect housing and rental crisis (and national infrastructure) storm.

The left side of politics is willing to sacrifice the living standards and quality of life of its very own citizens, and put them out on the street and living in homeless squalor - and the Greens are willing to sacrifice their green credentials and roots - in favour of the wellbeing and living standards of other peoples from other nations, all in the name of adhering to the extreme left ideology of critical race theory, post-colonialism, and diversity and inclusion.

"butthurt"

Enjoying your cultural imports, mate?

Post-war, the Libs have been in power much more than Labor, and significantly more since '96. Considering our economic structure, even when Lab is in power, it's very hard to argue that Australia isn't a right-wing country.

Similarly, our media - ABC and Guardian accepted (only launched in Oz ten years ago) - is backed by right wing interests: Stokes, Murdoch, Costello.

If the constant hand-wringing and anger on here and other political sites is anything to go by, Australia has taken the wrong road and found itself in a bleak situation. Yet rather than point the fingers at the powers that got us here, you, with much force, repetition, and zero humour, manage to peg it all on the other side of politics. Not once considering our history. You're utterly blinded by ideology.

In the Western world, the right of politics has long argued the job of govt is to create the economic conditions that allows business to flourish. And that's exactly what has happened, except in their government-prescribed freedom, business took manufacturing to the developing world, their head offices to tax havens which billed regional headquarters to keep their losses up and taxes down.

Business flourished. Shareholders too. This is the right wing dream.

...or maybe it was and people are wising up to it. But make no mistake, it's not left politics that got us to this point.

Immigration is the artificial economy booster that govt relies on to look appealing and remain in power. A sleight of hand used by both sides of politics in this neo-liberal mess.

On the topic: In all the whining about immigration, I've seldom heard anyone state some home truths. The govt that reduces it will also bring on tough short term economic conditions and a hit-job opposition will have the public believe its economic mismanagement and not downturn in demand causing it. They'll be gone by the next election and we're back to where we were.

And it's not just structural adjustment that would have to change, but Australians would start having to work the shitty jobs of the gig economy and aged care.

Of course, a govt could do something about those jobs but it would require left thinking and belief, and Australian governments of all stripes don't do that.

But you go on bagging the left for the right's fuck ups.

Although, knowing your form you'll have switched sides by Easter.

This is from Scotland but the same themes are everywhere including Australia.

Under a wonderful newly woke Scottish law, half the posts on swellnet could lead to prosecution of the poster or perhaps even the website.

If someone takes offence because you use the wrong word, comment too critically, joke unwokely, share a link that may upset somebody somewhere, or in any way criticise "marginalised" groups etc you can be prosecuted.

https://www.zerohedge.com/political/scottish-police-trained-target-actor...

Comedy will in future be restricted to jokes about middle aged white males and redheads - until redheads finally realise that they are suffer far more racism than almost any other group and start to use the law to fight back.

Stu I think you're bundling the various shades or dimensions of politics/economics/culture into one, and I've wanted to comment on this for a while.

Australia is still slightly to the right economically, and in some stupid ways.

We are still roughly in the centre politically in terms of being a relatively well functioning liberal democracy with freedom of speech, not overrun by fascism or socialist tyranny or thought control (although the left wants to change this).

We are now well out there on a far to the left cultural and ideological tangent, and still going. Have you spent any time in the city centre of Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne lately?

The left side of politics wants to shift Australia also far to the left economically and politically. They seek to do it by the whole "big government" agenda of large scale government directing and planning of the economy, particularly via a large unelected and ideologically left public service (funded by high taxes) that makes significant decisions for the nation that are out of the control of the people. This is what Chalmers' economic idol is pushing for.

Labor is well off the radar on a massive ideological tangent with its out of control immigration. Immigration in Australia has never been this high. It's no longer about using immigration to drive the economy. It's about ideology and creating a larger left leaning voter base. It is a significant cause of our housing/rental affordability problem, and increasing homelessness problem, and the same is happening across the Western world. There is nothing sane about the current immigration levels. It is the largest betrayal of the Australian people in living history.

I'm currently working in a couple of Australia's great universities, one in Brisbane and one in Sydney. I can see the full effects of another dimension of this immigration simply by looking at the people sitting next to me and reading their research. They are migrants from India, Pakistan, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, etc, and they are all pumping out Anti-West, anti-White people, far left ideologically leaning sociological research in critical theory, gender and lgbtqia+/queer studies, feminism, Marxism, post-colonialism, anti-capitalism, etc. They are basically anti Western civilisation, anti enlightenment values, but sitting within and funded by one of the great Western nations. They are eating away at undermining our society and way of life from within, and the taxpayer is funding them to do it.

Are you really ok with these kinds of people and this kind of immigration intake, immigration that is contributing to a housing crisis and homelessness, and of people who don't hold our values and are in fact actively working against them and our way of life, all in the name of the left's diversity and inclusion agenda?

This is what's arisen out of the right wing paradise that's been delivered to us the last forty years. The current social situation is fucking weird, but understand, it's the by-product of a populace detached from policy and governance. A situation foisted on us by GSCO's heroes.

We have no say in policy that prioritises int'l trade agreements over domestic workers. Working conditions and economic outcomes are determined from elsewhere and humans, being what we are, try to make sense of it, try to feel empowered, with new and admittedly wayward narratives.

But make no mistake. This is not a left wing error. Left wing politics stands in opposition to the status quo. So when I hear a twit like GSCO punch down on "butthurt lefties" while ignoring the right wing psychopaths that got us here...well, I'll clock up some keyboard time.

There are so many disconnects in current left driven trends:

Must make housing more affordable - but add 500k migrants to the pool of potential buyers / renters.

Must meet net zero - but 500k of migrants make the improbable impossible.

Must meet net zero - but new mines for battery metals struggle for approvals, finance and are seen as evil by the same net zero paper heroes.

Must promote highly skilled competitive workforce to compete internationally - but Diversity HR policies force a skew in hiring towards mediocrity based on simple numbers - a smaller candidate pool - e.g. if 10% of engineering graduates are female, attempts to hire a 50/50 gender balance in a workforce results in positions unfilled or lower quality candidates being hired (read many anecdotes of this being attempted and eventually disbanded as just impractical).

Must lessen racism - but talk about it non stop creating a sense it is way worse than it actually is so everyone starts to think along racial lines.

Gender - as above.

Must lessen the mental health and societal problems associated with inter generational scars of past injustices - but must also ensure the issues are discussed endlessly and children are taught to never forget.

Must avoid wars and promote peace - but demonise all opposition, ignore their views and lead with military might and threats - leaving diplomacy as a dying profession.

Must fight disinformation - but lead with it as a matter of course "when things get serious you have to lie".

Promote the concept of "my truth" (whatever makes you feel good / appear in the right) as a way to view the world - but wonder why it is so hard to establish common shared views on issues and policies.

Never seen so much frustrating weirdness.

Spin and agendas have supplanted facts and reality.

Some is just momentum of themes that built up steam over decades. But some must be orchestrated as it it too pervasive and MSM supported not to have a top down agenda.

Divide and conquer is my guess at the motive. Societal weakness, division, chaos, mediocrity and confusion make for easier control and exploitation.

these things frog speaks of are today's contemporary left.

Everyone dreams of the traditional working class left of 80s and 90s Australia, but it has vanished.

In fact, the contemporary left has completely turned on its traditional voter base of the working class on favour of other identity groups. The left absolutely despises the masses now and has gravitated towards the educated, inner city, wealthy, cultural left elite and their university incubated cultural Marxist ideology that we now see all around us today, particularly in the inner city, public service, many large corporations, and universities.

In terms of immigration, the left favours the welfare of the coloured migrant over and above the ordinary working class citizen. In terms of The Voice, the left favours the rights of Aboriginal Australians over and above those of the non-Aboriginal.

This despising of and turning away from the everyday citizen by the contemporary left started particularly around the time of Trump and Brexit, and was reinforced by things like the dissent of the masses against the left's communist style oppressive covid overreach. How dare the ordinary citizen do things like support Trump and Brexit.

The contemporary left views the traditional working class Westerner as an uneducated, ignorant, bogan, racist, fascist, sovereign state, conspiracy theorist nutjob who needs to spend time in Chinese style reeducation camps, which is what our universities are on track to becoming.

Jenny George "the party left me, I didn't leave the party".

""The left absolutely despises the masses now and has gravitated towards the educated, inner city, wealthy, cultural left elite and their university incubated cultural Marxist ideology that we now see all around us today, particularly in the inner city, public service, many large corporations, and universities""

That is nonsense, just talking jibberish straight out of the whole attack mode of Trump, Murdoch right wing extremism nuts trying to create fear and division.

Nope. It’s spot on. That’s why you’d never consider the ALP as a left leaning party anymore.
I’m a blue collar Australian. Don’t read or watch Murdoch. I’m not a right wing extremist. Please don’t try and delegitimise the opinions of regular people who’ve been abandoned by the Labor party in the ALP’s wholesale recreation of themselves as a party of globalists.

ALP has had the run of the show for 700 days. Everything going down is their fault. There is no need to even mention the “opposition”. The housing and rent crises where Australians can’t afford basic shelter is ALP’s fault completely….100%. They bragged about pushing through a million visas as a priority and they have decided to import well over a million people in their 700 days in charge. The Labor party has decided to import an average of 1500 more people every single day. They did this on purpose and with purpose!

It’s the ALP’s fault that young people don’t ever think they’ll own a house and can’t afford to rent in the meantime.

Just as the covid era had reset the clock in favour of Australians vs Globalisation open borders and the Australian standard of living was ready to regain lost ground, the ALP got in power and ensured that would never happen and did everything they possibly could to push momentum back towards globalisation and reduction of living standards for existing Aussies. The proof of their success is evident in the tent cities and rough sleepers springing up around Australia.

It’s the ALP’s fault that wages aren’t keeping up with inflation. It’s ALP’s fault that the environment is being destroyed to accommodate millions more people and that species extinction is continuing apace. It’s ALP’s fault when the next drought hits in a few years and there’s no water to go around because there’s too much demand due to Albo’s Army of immigrants.
They literally oversaw the largest decline in Australian living standards in history. This was a conscious decision and It’s indefensible.

I know you're not a silly person so I won't patronise you, however you're missing an important distinction: The current economic malaise was caused by right wing thinking and politics.

Say what you will about the cultural left, state of the Labor party....whatever, but the wider issue of where the Western world finds itself was not caused, as GSCO keeps stating, by left politics.

This distinction is important because some people are suggesting the medicine for the current malaise is an even greater shift to the right.

Surely you can see the problem here..?

Hawkey and transgender, haha. Crikey.
I still don't get how the whole transgender thing, woke etc are classed as left??
Stu put a lot more succinctly than I ever could before.

And yes all those problems do need to be addressed, but to blame the 'left' for these issues is kind of misguided in my view. They have been brewing for years, not just the last 2.

Overview
Seasonally adjusted, wages grew 0.9% in the December quarter 2023 and 4.2% over the year. The annual increase is the highest recorded since March quarter 2009.

Yes…..it is all Labor’s fault.

The ALP is making decisions that result in Australians experiencing plunging falls in living standards. In real terms this means that the Labor party is making people literally homeless. They are making people choose between paying the rent and putting food on the table. The ALP is making people choose between obtaining shelter or raising a family.

Nothing you can say can hide these facts. The ALP is consciously choosing to destroy the Australia we know. And this isn’t the result of global issues, this is relative to our OECD peers who operate in the same environment. In fact we should be doing much better due to our powerful export industries and small population.

Australia will continue its rapid decline until every Australian realises that the ALP / LNP are not operating in their interests. The decline of Australia will continue until the ALP / LNP are disbanded as the population has recognised their duplicitousness and treason.

Look at the trend on every graph from a starting point of ALP governance mid-2022
